Angels and Assholes #8: Asshole Politics

This one certainly seems absurd. Maybe there’s another side to this issue. I hope so:

A law enforcement official, Scott Jones (real name…I don’t think we would want to protect this guy), in Sacramento County, California is running for a U.S. Senate seat as a Republican against incumbent Democratic Representative Ami Bera. Mr. Jones (I can’t restrain from throwing in the Bob Dylan line: “There’s something happening here but you don’t know what it is, do you Mr. Jones?) is (I hope was) a sheriff.

He voted against a bill by Senior Senator Dianne Feinstein, current sr. senator in the U.S. representing California, that forbids people on a federal terrorist watch list from buying guns.

Okay, let’s assume Mr. Jones doesn’t really want terrorists owning guns. Why would he vote against this bill? I initially figured there could be some ‘pork’ in the bill that was objectionable to police. Although it should make sense that gov’t officials shouldn’t use blackmail to sneak in special interests, we know it happens. But the police chiefs of Los Angeles, San Diego, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington are among other supporters of the bill. So, it would seem we should throw the pork idea out of the pen.

What does that leave us with?

1) He thinks he needs the NRA backing and/or money to get elected? Of course he would then be serving for the better good of us all? Not. But, would the NRA really back him for voting against the bill? If so, maybe they should be shot? Although I’m kidding, I realize this would likely not be considered politically correct and I could lose my job…oh, right – I’m retired. Maybe arrested for an attempt at satire?

2) Because it sounds like Sen. Feinstein (Bernie, too) sounds Jewish? If so, he must really hate President Obama.

3) He’s running for office now and must appear to be a full-fledged politician and oppose any bill advocated by the other party, no matter how much sense it makes?

If any of these things are true, I suggest it’s a metaphor for a lot of what’s wrong in politics, today… things that I hope most of us would like fixed. Either this Jones guy doesn’t know what’s going on, or he’s dishonest. I know he hasn’t been elected yet, but shouldn’t dishonest people be screened out of even running for office? What if he does bamboozle enough people to vote for him to get elected (if you get my drift)?

You better vote. As our nasty, black, Muslim president once said: “Our destiny is not determined for us…but by us.”

P.S. One of my readers googled my assertion last week that a hedge fund mgr was buying up water rights… and discovered it was indeed true. My facts for this blog come from the “News Service” and their article in the Mpls Star and Tribune, Jan 11, 2016.
