The Obvious Advocate - Extinction

Flat-earthers are obviously mental ‘flat-liners.’ Climate deniers aren’t far behind. It’s obvious we’re at a turning point that simply can’t be ignored.

Richard Attenborough in introducing the series “Our Planet” shows the earth-rise from the moon. It’s a bright, colorful—vivid blues and greens—inviting, precious earth floating innocently in space … although unfortunately inhabited by parasites.

He then tells us since that photo, fifty years ago, the population of parasites has more than doubled and the wild environmentally sound creatures have diminished by 60%. 60%! The parasites are sucking their own life-sustaining necessities dry killing off life on our earth.

That’s all any rational person should need to hear. Species are becoming extinct. Extinct! Gone forever. Our species—us parasites—are sucking the earth dry, polluting the air and the water that remains. According to scientists, world water demand will exceed supply by 40% by 2030. We adults can remain comfortably—maybe uncomfortably—numb, because we can continue to believe, erroneously, we’ll be fine. Adults going about the business of our lives obliviously not caring about the future or the threat of extinction. We need to be aware that’s not only the extinction of animal life we should be aware of.

But our youth is not so complacent. Such an unusual reversal: the youth taking the adult role while we adults plod on blindly focused on profit and retirement wages, or as 15 year-old Greta said “…only concerned about money and fairytales of eternal economic growth”…without regard for the long term costs.

We must accept that this is, obviously, real. So what can we do? We must immediately vote out the current administration in Washington. We need leaders, those that can actually affect change, who have perspective and care about the future and lead the world in preserving the future of life on our precious planet. And then we need to hold the leaders we elect accountable. Remember, in spite of current rhetoric in Washington, they work for us. By voting, we let them know that.

Of course we know our planet will survive us parasites, eventually it’s the parasite that becomes extinct. This is “science,” not “science fiction.” It makes me sick to think I am a part of this quickly growing canker. Let’s start the process, now—this year—of getting responsible leaders in power. It’s what we can do. It’s obviously what we must do.
